China has always been something of a challenge for companies such as TPR, dealing with unclaimed property and missing beneficiaries.

Historically, the Chinese population was fairly static within the country, and family records were maintained within ancestral halls. It is only comparatively recently that the Chinese state has formally acknowledged the concept of private property.

TPR is occasionally involved with cases in China, but the lack of centralised and publicly available records makes it a difficult area in which to conduct research.

But the following caught our eye.

Finding lost wallets for Olympics tourists may be a small start. But unclaimed property is sold, and proceeds passed to the State. Now, who knows whether those proceeds can later be claimed by a legitimate owner? Our contacts in China are following up the story.
